What Do You Do When Your Printer Says That It Is Offline but the USB Is Plugged In?
If your office printer offline remains
Offline despite being powered up and plugged in to a USB interface, the
helpless feeling that your hardware keeps you captive can increase your
frustration level quickly. Before you assume the worst -- a really non-functional
device that needs replacement -- a few easy troubleshooting may put your device
back in service.
Consumables
Printers go offline when their
toner Cartridges or ink tanks reach a low-enough level to trigger a built-in
replacement warning, or, even in the case of a few HP inkjet printers, their
inks perish. In a number of these situations, you can override the non or
expiration warning and continue printing. These messages pose double
difficulties, however. If you replace the consumable to which they refer, you
risk wasting ink or toner in a capsule which hasn't fully emptied. Conversely,
if you override them and continue printing, you risk running the consumable dry
and damaging the print mechanism.
Jams and Misfeeds
Paper jams induce your printer offline before You remove them completely. If a stray sheet rips apart inside
the machine, you must extract every fragment to clear the jam, or the printer offline simply jams again. Once you finish responding to a misfeed, you may want to
reset the printer by pressing a key or button on its control panel to put it
back into service. Before you do, then examine the input to ensure that the
paper provide is made of good-quality material and the sheets are placed
correctly within the feed manuals. Individual print jobs into a queue which
lists pending output in order of priority, which usually reflects the order in
which you print individual documents. You can choose the print queue itself
offline, which correspondingly prevents the work list from accepting fresh
files to output. Assess your print-management software for signals that you've
stopped or stop the queue, and put it back online to regain access to this
printer.
Starts and Restarts
Printers, computers and the
driver applications That enables the two to communicate correctly can reach a
point of miscommunication that just a full restart can heal. Shut off the
printer, save your work and restart your computer to clear out memory and then
refresh your system. Check the documentation on your printer offline to verify if you
need to start it before or after you power up your PC. In some cases, starting
up in the wrong order prevents your computer from seeing and accessing your
printer.
